UNHINGED: GUILLORY POLITICAL STUNT DE-FUNDS LCG BY $67 MILLION.

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

Grandstanding at Election Time, Guillory Veto Entirely Deletes 15 Property Tax Millages.

Lafayette’s deepening leadership crisis is illustrated by the most recent political stunt of Mayor-President Josh Guillory that blew up in his face.

Just weeks before the primary election, Mayor-President Guillory made a big show of vetoing property tax millage roll-forwards that had been approved by the Parish Council.

Instead of letting the Parish Council know in advance that he didn’t support rolling forward the millages, he waited until after they were approved.

Then, Guillory issued a long veto message, proposed a tax commission, and postured about tax increases needing to be approved by voters (even though millage roll-forwards can never exceed the maximum already approved by voters).

When it came time to override the Mayor-President’s veto, Lafayette Parish Assessor Conrad Comeaux (who also serves as Chairman of CFIG) informed Guillory and the Council that his veto is of the whole ordinance.

This means Guillory's veto entirely deleted 15 property tax millages and means that $67 million in property tax revenue cannot be collected, until his mistake is fixed.

Now, the Council has to call an emergency meeting in two weeks to pass a new ordinance. This will likely delay tax notices going out, create confusion, and give citizens less time to pay their property taxes.

This is another example of the deteriorating leadership situation and the deepening crisis within the Guillory Administration at LCG.

PLEASE NOTE: This public record on the activities of the Mayor-President and the current Administration is from public documents of the Louisiana Secretary of State, the Louisiana Board of Ethics, Lafayette Consolidated Government, the 15th Judicial District Court, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Louisiana Division of Administration, the University of Louisiana including media reports regarding same. CFIG is cataloguing the relevant literature to accelerate and enhance public exploration of these issues.
